Dr. Aysha Mujeeb
Senior Research Assistant at
BioMAD Lab at KAUST
Aysha Mujeeb:" My research interests and expertise are centered around the field of the cell-material interface. With a solid foundation laid during my training, I have focused my efforts on designing peptide-based hydrogels using natural amino acid building blocks post my doctoral studies. These novel hydrogels have served as templates for cartilage tissue engineering as demonstrated in my publication in Acta Biomaterialia in 2012 (Mujeeb et al. Actabiomaterialia 2012). Based on this work, I received the Robert Mathys Foundation award for best oral presentation at the eCM XI: Cartilage and Disc: Repair and Regeneration conference in Davos, Switzerland. Through a sustained period of research during my Ph.D. years, my supervisor Professor Alberto Sainai in collaboration with Dr. Guillaume Saint-Pierre and myself established Manchester BIOGEL (formerly known as PeptiGelDesign Limited – a spin-off company originating from the University of Manchester, UK). It has been an inspirational and exciting journey for my academic and intellectual development, culminating in product development that has opened a field of translational medicine with opportunities for many other biomedical applications. Moreover, for my postdoctoral training, I joined the laboratory of Dr. Zigang Ge at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Peking University to further gain experience in biomaterial design and development for cartilage tissue engineering applications. In collabora0on with Professor Marcy Zenobi- Wong at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich, I received training in handling human biological specimens and conducted biochemical tests to determine cellular viability and composition of the chondral flaps that were debrided a_er hip arthroscopy. I showed that although these chondral flaps were viable, they underwent proteoglycan degeneration. Further work to understand this process is currently underway by a Ph.D. student at ETH-Zurich. In Professor Guangjun Nie's laboratory, I designed a new peptide-based hydrogel for the delivery of doxorubicin for localized chemotherapy to prevent breast cancer recurrence in animal models (Qi et al. ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces 2018). This work was the basis for my receiving a Chinese Academy of Sciences President’s International Fellowship. In addition to my research, I have had the rewarding experience of teaching and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of peptide self-assembly and tissue engineering. I have actively participated in programs that aim to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in the sciences. My involvement in such programs has provided me with the opportunity to promote and speak at several universities about career paths in biomedical research. As a motivated and ambitious researcher dedicated to conducting high-quality scientific research, I am working in the BioMAD Lab at KAUST as a Senior Research Scientist."

Prof. Dr. Irfan Zia Qureshi
Professor in Department of Zoology,
Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.
Prof. Dr. Irfan Zia Qureshi is currently working as a Professor in Department of Zoology, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. He has done his PhD from University of Sheffield, United Kingdom and Post-doc from Sheffield, UK. During his PhD, he has demonstrated for the first time in the world that trigeminal ganglion can be induced to extend neurons in isolation cultures. As a Post-Doc, he demonstrated again for the first time that receptor for anti-diabetic sulphonylurea drugs is expressed in the kidney tissue also. This obviously was a major discovery for developing drugs to counter kidney failure in diabetic patients.
He has over 35 years of teaching experience. He has 82 Research publication with 180 impact factor. He has produced 11 PhDs and 126 MPhil students. He has earned and successfully completed research projects worth Rs. 5.16 million from NRPU, HEC), 1.736 million from Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and USD $ 10,000/- international grant from ISESCO. Organization of Islamic countries, Morocco. Besides, he has also earned and completed several small grants out of university research fund.
At Quaid-i-Azam University, he, with his PhD & MPhil students, demonstrated for the first time, that a reproduction related peptide namely “Kisspeptin” can also cause degeneration of prepubertal gonads but not the pubertal gonads. This was surprising for the International Scientific community in reproductive physiology and was soon recognized by international scientists. In a quest to discover new anticoagulants for coagulation disorders, again for the first time in the world, he discovered the new role of kisspeptin peptide as an anticoagulant. Very recently, he with one of his MPhil students showed that Koel bird produces six vocal sounds, whereas only 03 calls were known to the world for the last 70 years. This research was published in PLOS ONE journal. Overall, he has contributed to medical physiology, drug research, toxicology, zoology, and behavioral science. He also regularly review top quality scientific research articles submitted to various W and X category journals in physiology and toxicology.

Dr Iftikhar Ali Khawar
Dr Iftikhar Ali Khawar has done his PhD in Cancer Biology from the Catholic University of Korea and completed two years of post-doctoral training at Samsung Medical Center. His research was focused on establishing novel, clinically relevant 3D tumor-stroma co-culture models to study tumor microenvironment (TME)-mediated drug resistance mechanisms in pancreatic and liver cancers. He found that cancer cells exhibit increased invasion and a lower response to anticancer drugs under co-culture conditions, thereby suggesting that TME-targeting strategies could serve as effective therapeutic modalities for cancer patients. He has published many research articles in ISI Indexed, IF journals. He has presented his research at several conferences in the field of cancer biology, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the British Association for Cancer Research, and the Catholic University Biomedical Industry Symposium, as well as Institut Pasteur Korea. In his current role as a staff scientist, he will build on his previous training in tumor microenvironment (TME)-mediated drug resistance by shifting focus to the immune microenvironment. His goal is to identify novel targets that enhance immunotherapy response in pancreatic cancer patients.
